When coffee first spread through Europe, people used familiar linen cloth to strain and extract it. Even today in French cuisine, linen cloth is often used to strain soups. Thanks to linen’s naturally derived antibacterial properties and quick-drying nature, a clean linen cloth made perfect sense as an everyday filtering tool.
This linen coffee filter was developed with inspiration from that tradition.
The whole filter is made from four different types of linen fabric.
The most important is the linen double gauze used for the body. This special fabric—woven in two layers of loosely structured gauze—gently embraces the ground beans and does not interfere with their blooming when hot water is poured. We tested dozens of linen fabrics, and only this double gauze achieved the right balance.
The linen canvas (a firm, heavy fabric) is used for the bottom panel, slowing and stabilizing the flow rate to optimize extraction.
The perimeter is reinforced with a bias tape made from lightweight apparel fabric. This tape is cut from leftover fabric scraps, giving them a second life.
The small protruding handle at the bottom is a linen tape. It allows you to pinch and hold the filter when discarding the grounds after brewing, keeping your fingers away from the hottest part of the body.
The overall shape is optimized for modern cone drippers.
The depth of nel-drip with the ease of paper.
So how does coffee taste when brewed with a 100% linen filter? Taste is always personal, but we believe it captures the deep, soft richness of nel-drip while offering the convenience of paper. The brewing feel is close to nel-drip, but afterward, simply rinse the filter with water and hang it in your kitchen—it will dry within half a day, so there is little risk of mold.
An appearance that grows with use.
The filter starts with the natural beige tone of raw linen, but with each brew, the coffee gradually colors the fabric. While it may shrink slightly, repeated use makes it fit better—just like a pair of well-worn jeans that develops character over time. We hope it becomes a beloved daily tool, growing more personal and full of life with each use.
Finally, we would like to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Ryu, representative of Caffè micho, for his valuable guidance in the joint development of this product. Thank you very much.
